Belgium back in Davis Cup final after 111 years

$

Steve Darcis completed a thrilling comeback to send Belgium into their first Davis Cup final for more than 100 years on Sunday, winning the deciding fifth rubber against Argentina.

The hosts had trailed 2-1 overnight but world number 15 David Goffin crushed Diego Schwartzman 6-3 6-2 6-1 levelled things up and then Darcis, roared on by home fans in the Forest National, fought past Federico Delbonis 6-4 2-6 7-5 7-6(3).

Darcis had squandered two match points at 5-4 in the fourth set but after forging ahead in the tiebreak he powered away a smash to end the contest and was immediately mobbed by his team mates who rushed on to court to celebrate.

Belgium, who have never won the team competition, will have home advantage against Andy Murray's Britain who reached their first final for 37 years by beating Australia.

Victory had looked a big ask on Saturday as Argentina won the doubles to take a 2-1 lead, but the failure of their number one Leonardo Mayer to take to court on Sunday against Goffin helped swing the tie around.

Mayer, ranked 39, had played nearly eight hours of tennis on Friday and Saturday and visiting captain Daniel Orsanic opted to play 68th-ranked Schwartzman instead.

Goffin described his performance as "perfect" as he left the stage for Darcis, perhaps best known for beating Rafa Nadal at Wimbledon in 2013, to finish the job against a player ranked one place lower in the rankings.

Darcis sailed through the first set but Delbonis dominated the second with his opponent growing weary.

The crunch moment came at 5-5 in the third set when Delbonis dropped serve and Darcis then converted his first set point.

Three consecutive breaks of serve, two for Darcis, in the fourth saw him serve at 5-4 but two match points went begging and Delbonis forced a tiebreak.

With the fans chanting his name, Darcis played superbly to move 5-1 ahead and then 6-2, and although Delbonis saved one more match point, Darcis would not be denied.

Belgium's only other final, in 1904, ended in a 5-0 defeat by Britain.

Burkina Faso army enters capital as coup leaders free president

Burkina Faso army troops have entered the capital Ouagadougou without resistance and begun negotiating the surrender of coup leaders, police said early today as France's ambassador tweeted that the interim president had been released.

"All units (of the army mobilised on Monday to march on the capital) reached Ouagadougou" overnight, Colonel Serge Alain Ouedraogo, deputy head of the Burkinabe police, told AFP. "We must now secure the surrender of the (coup leaders) without gunfire or bloodshed," he said.

He spoke after French ambassador Gilles Thibault tweeted that interim president Michel Kafando, who had been under house arrest, was now "at the French residence". Kafando had been arrested on Wednesday as Burkina was plunged into turmoil when soldiers from the powerful presidential guard regiment loyal to ex-leader Blaise Compaore detained him and prime minister Isaac Zida, himself a former deputy commander of the unit.

The RSP, an elite unit of 1,300 men, officially declared a coup the following day and installed General Gilbert Diendere, a close Compaore ally, as the country's new leader. At least 10 people were killed and more than 100 injured in protests sparked by the coup, which came just weeks before what would have been the first elections since Compaore was ousted in a popular revolt last October after trying to extend his 27-year grip on power.

Burkina Faso's army chiefs yesterday ordered coup leaders to lay down their arms as troops began marching from the provinces towards the capital Ouagadougou. "All the national armed forces are converging on Ouagadougou with the sole aim of disarming the presidential guard (RSP) without any bloodshed," an army statement said.

It advised members of the RSP to go to the Sangoule Lamizana military barracks west of the capital, saying they and their families would remain safe. The stark warnings came as anger grew over a west African-mediated peace deal to end the latest crisis in the landlocked former French colony.

Witnesses said the military units were greeted along their march to the capital by crowds of people cheering. French President Francois Hollande also demanded "all those involved in the putsch to immediately lay down their arms and hand over power to the legitimate authorities -- or face the consequences."

And he warned that France, which still wields significant influence in its former African colonies, could also "apply sanctions to those opposing the holding of regular elections". A similar call was also issued by the presidents of Niger and Chad, who called on the renegade soldiers to "return to the barracks" and hand back power to the transition administration they toppled on September 17.

After 11 years in coma, fan wakes up and is stunned to know Roger Federer won 17 slams

Jesus Aparicio woke up from a coma after 11 years and was stunned to know that his favourite Tennis player Roger Federer is still playing and is on the hunt for his 18th grand slam.

Aparicio was involved in a serious car accident on December 12, 2004, the year Roger Federer was numero uno in the ATP world rankings. Aparicio woke up from coma on August 27 this year. He asked about his family, friends, current affairs and Roger Federer as his speech returned.

“I thought he had retired. When I knew that at 34 years old, he is still playing and is number two in the world, I thought they were kidding me. I could not believe it. When I heard that he reached 17 slam titles, I put my hands on my face. I knew Federer was very good but I never thought he could win all he has won,” Aparicio told tennisworld.org

Eleven years ago, Marat Safin, Carlos Moya, Tim Henman, Andre Agassi, David Nalbandian, Guillermo Coria, Gaston Gaudio, and Andy Roddick made up the top ten of ATP world rankings. They all have retired since. Lleyton Hewitt will hang up his racket after Australian Open in 2016, but Federer is still at the top of his game currently ranked number two.

Aparicio watched Federer play again Novak Djokovic - a total stranger to him because, in 2004, Djokovic was ranked 186, at the final of US Open. Aparicio was amazed to see his favourite play so well.

Aparicio now wants to see Federer play at Wimbledon. He hopes his dream of 11 years will come true.

Government does a volte face, withdraws draft National Encryption Policy

Marking a u-turn in the chain of events that is the National Encryption Policy circus, Communications and IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has directed the relevant officials to withdraw the draft. He stated the reason being that this draft was unrepresentative of the final view of the government. Its withdrawal, pending ‘rewording’,  indicates that a newer version is to be expected.

He also clarified that the purpose of encryption was not to interfere with the common man’s experience with social media and messaging and further stated that no ordinary consumer would be affected by the encryption policy.

The original draft policy mandating that all classes of users ranging from regular citizens to business to academics would be required to maintain unencrypted (plain text) versions of their data and communications was met with widespread outrage, as evidence on social channels. Even with the release of what appeared to be a hastily assembled addendum excluding social media communications, banking and e-commerce transactions, the draft was still rife with outrageous suggestions regarding the treatment of a person’s data.

The government appears to have bought time, but expect a round two when the next ‘updated’ version of this draft comes to light. Stay tuned.

NRHM scam: Mayawati accuses Centre of misusing CBI, suspects 'casteist officers' behind it

BSP supremo Mayawati on Tuesday targeted the BJP-led government over the CBI's decision to question her on the multi-crore NRHM scam, claiming she had no connection with it and that the Centre was misusing the agency ahead of Bihar elections for political gains.

Questioning the timing of the CBI investigation against her, she said the move against her was an attempt to "demoralise" her party and divert attention from the "failure" of the government to fulfil its promises made to the people.

"I have no connection to the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scam. BJP, which is trying to use CBI, should give up such tactics as such attempt have cost them dearly earlier," she told reporters here.

But at the same time she said the decision of the agency could be the handiwork of some "casteist officers" who look down upon Dalits and backwards.

"It is possible that the high command of the BJP is not aware of the move of these officers...it has to be probed," she said.

The BSP supremo claimed that the decision to question her four years after the scam came to light only reeks of political vendetta.

"It is like serving absolute majority in UP elections to the BSP. We have no problems with it...during Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, cases were lodged against me in Taj corridor case as well as a case of disproportionate assets was filed but I was given clean chit by the High Court as well as the Supreme Court," she said.

She said before a CBI officer called me, the news that "I could be questioned in the NRHM scam was leaked to the media in a bid to demoralise my party workers and me ahead of Bihar assembly elections".

Mayawati said such tactics of misleading the people will not help the BJP in any way.

"I do not succumb to pressure, I do not bend," she said.

Explaining her stand on the issue, Mayawati said the decision was taken by her cabinet and subsequent decisions on appointing two chief medical officers in every district was taken by the concerned minister Babulal Kushwaha.

"I warn BJP to give up such deeds. Congress had also tried such tricks to divert attention from its failures of governance," she said.

Indicating a possible understanding between BJP and SP, she said the Uttar Pradesh government's "failures" especially on the law and order front are being deliberately ignored by the Centre for political gains.

She also attacked the Akhilesh Yadav government for holding the first phase of panchayat elections on October 9 which is the death anniversary of Kanshi Ram.

She said people, who will vote in the elections, won't be able to come to Lucknow to pay their homage to the BSP leader.

Russian embassy 'shelled' amid Syria build-up fears

Russia has demanded action after a shell landed in its embassy compound in Damascus, as President Vladimir Putin tried to reassure Israel over an apparent military build-up in Syria that US officials now say includes combat aircraft.

Moscow said on Monday a mortar fell on the embassy compound in the Syrian capital on Sunday without causing damage and blamed forces battling President Bashar al-Assad and their "outside sponsors" for the shelling.

"We await a clear standpoint on this terrorist act from all members of the international community, including regional actors," Russia's foreign ministry said in a statement. "What is needed is not just words, but concrete action." The Russian embassy, in Damascus' Mazraa neighbourhood, has been hit before. In May, one person was killed by mortar rounds that landed nearby. Three were hurt when mortar rounds landed inside the compound in April.

The United States says Russia -- one of the few remaining allies of Assad -- is deploying personnel and military hardware to Syria, sparking fears Moscow is getting ready to fight alongside government forces. On Monday, two US officials told AFP that Russia has deployed 28 ground attack and fighter planes at an airfield in the western Syrian province of Latakia.

One of the officials added there were also about 20 Russian combat and transport helicopters at the base. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity. Moscow has also sent troops, tanks, temporary housing, armoured personnel carriers and artillery units to Syria in recent weeks, US officials have said.

But Russia contends any such support falls in line with existing defence contracts. Moscow and Washington on Friday launched military talks on the four-year conflict that has claimed nearly 250,000 lives.

Apple has officially launched watchOS 2 for the Apple Watch.

According to the Verge, the new update comes with a number of new features including native third-party app support. Apple initially planned to release watchOS 2 on September 16 alongside iOS 9.
But the company was forced to delay the release at the last minute due to an unexpected bug.

The update paves the way for developers to provide a better experience for Apple Watch owners. The app developers can now build native apps and take advantage of all the sensors with watchOS 2. At present, third-party apps that run on the watch are beamed down from a paired iPhone, but apps that run directly on the Watch promise to be faster and much more capable. The users can also expect new Complications, custom watch faces and improvements to Siri, Maps, and Digital Touch.

The updated operating system is now available to download for everyone.

Afghan Taliban leader calls for unity, hints at peace talks in Eid message

$
0
0

The new leader of the Afghan Taliban, Mullah Mansour, called for unity and raised the possibility of peace talks with the government in Kabul in a message released on Tuesday to mark the upcoming Muslim festival of Eid.

The message comes days after a group of dissident Taliban commanders denounced Mansour's recent appointment to replace the Islamist militant group's late leader, Mullah Omar. Divisions within the Taliban have threatened to derail fledgling peace talks with the Afghan government and allow the Islamic State group to expand its foothold in the region.

Mansour was hastily appointed Taliban leader in July after Afghan intelligence leaked the news that Omar, the movement's reclusive one-eyed leader, had been dead for more than two years. Mansour was Omar's deputy.

Many Taliban commanders oppose Mansour, blaming him for concealing news of Omar's death and describing his appointment as irregular. Mansour sought to appease disaffected commanders and warned divisions were a creation of the enemy.

"The creation of different groups ... is the last conspiracy of the invaders for continuation of the American proxy war in Afghanistan," he said in the Eid message. "God willing, the Afghan Muslim people will, through their strengthening of unity, foil this conspiracy."

Mansour also raised the possibility of resurrecting peace talks with the Afghan government, but warned others not to get involved. The first round of negotiations was held in Pakistan in early July but the talks collapsed after it became known Omar had been dead for two years.

"If the country is not under occupation, the problem of the Afghans can be resolved through intra-Afghan understanding. Any foreign pressure under the pretext of resolving the Afghan problem is not going to resolve the problem but will rather create other problems," Mansour said.

Many commanders were suspicious of the role of neighbouring Pakistan in hosting the talks. Pakistan and Afghanistan have separate but allied Taliban insurgencies and have long accused each other of not doing enough to stamp out Taliban bases on either side of the border.

Some Afghan Taliban feel that elements in the Pakistani security forces want to manipulate the Afghan insurgency for their own purposes. The Pakistanis say they are hosting the talks in good faith. Mansour is considered by many Taliban to be too close to Pakistan, an impression reinforced when he chose Sirajuddin Haqqani as his deputy. The latter runs the Haqqani network, a militant group considered very close to Pakistani intelligence.

Aamir Khan's the butt of all jokes. Literally. While the actor usually doesn't take criticism too kindly, his recent actions have called in for severe trolling on Twitter. And the latest reason being his Dangal poster which he unveiled on the social networking site on Monday.

Aamir was supposed to start shoot for Dangal on September 1 itself but after a little delay, the film went on floors on September 21 and Aamir decided to unveil the first look poster without further a do. But little did he know that he will be facing the brunt of it yet another time.

Soon, Twitter started buzzing with jokes on Aamir and there were several who started trolling him and his 'mud'-dled up 'Dangal poster. We're sure Aamir won't be laughing at them at all but here are some of the funniest samples.

For those who are wondering why we used the word 'again', here's what happened few weeks back. Aamir Khan had just finished watching Salman Khan's Bajrangi Bhaijaan and was completely emotional, to the extent of breaking down in front of the media. Following this incident, Aamir had an emotional breakdown one more time after watching Kangana Ranaut and Imran Khan's Katti Batti. Twitter went beserk with his consecutive cry-episodes and started trolling the actor.

While the actor recently in an interview said that he only laughed it off, knowing Aamir, it's definitely a different tale altogther. We wonder how he will react to these jokes now. Sorry Aamir, we loved your poster but these jokes are hilarious!
